Grab your cameras, put on your hiking boots, and let’s begin our tour of one of our favorite parks!
Located at 15800 State Recreation Road in La Pine
The scenery along our Oregon highways and byways is undeniably some of the most beautiful—so much so, visitors and residents don’t mind having to take a long drive. In fact, the longer the drive, the more opportunities there will be to stop along the way and take it all in. Picnics are popular during the good weather, and impromptu hikes are very often the cause for many of us being late to work, events, or simply coming home each night. The drive to La Pine State Park in Sunriver is one of those breathtakingly gorgeous drives, but it’s a short one; this breathtaking park is only about 20 miles from your Sunriver Pines vacation escape, so enjoy it while it lasts!
Famously Large Pine Trees
Crisp air and the refreshing scent of mature pines are the first things you may notice when beginning your exploration of La Pine State Park near Sunriver. The pine trees you see everywhere throughout your adventures are amongst some of the largest in the nation, and “Big Red” is THE largest; measuring 162 feet tall and nearly 29 feet around, this tree is suspected of being more than 500 years old! Think about it for a moment: This gigantic tree was considered ancient long before our country became a country!
Hiking trails that meander through the park allow you to bring your leashed dog on your explorations; just remember to be courteous to other park patrons and clean up after your fur children. A boat launch site in the park means you have your choice in fishing spots. Set up a chair on the banks of the Deschutes or rent a boat and fish from the deck. There is no wrong answer in La Pine State Park. And who knows? By the end of your stay in your Sunriver Pines vacation home, you may have chosen to try both! Picnic areas throughout the park offer quiet spots with scenic views to enjoy while devouring the lunch you prepared. All the exercise and cool, fresh air will make even the simplest sandwich taste like a gourmet meal. And although the camera on your phone takes wonderful pictures, this is one place you may want to bring your “good” camera. Family pictures taken along the grassy banks of the Deschutes River make awesome Christmas card covers!
Outside the Park
La Pine is a small town, with La Pine State Park in Sunriver considered its huge heart; only about 1600+ people call it their home, but anyone who visits immediately feels like it’s their own personal home away from home. Primarily known for its outdoor Sunriver, Oregon activities, hiking, boating, and camping are popular activities, but are not the only game in this small town. Tranquil, peaceful, and unbelievably beautiful, Quail Run Golf Course, located at 16725 Northridge in La Pine, is famed for being the second most challenging course in the area, but the views tend to calm angry golfers who have duffed a hole! Picturesque, challenging, and exciting, this course has been added to the bucket list of golfers from all over the world!
Time to Eat!

Appease your rumbling stomach with all you can eat chips and salsa before digging in to one of their south of the border creations. Chinese food aficionados will find Lucky Fortune Chinese Restaurant at 16492 William Foss Road (also in La Pine) to be their delicious cup of tea! Known for generous portion sizes and authentic flavors as well as reasonable prices, the chances of being hungry again in a couple of hours tend to be very low!
