Benham Falls to Slough Meadow
The Deschutes River Trail is over 12 miles long and varies greatly from mile to mile. We like hiking this trail in convenient sections to see each unique part. One of our favorite sections is Benham Falls to Slough Meadow, which is a 4.6-mile trail with a moderate rating.
The trail is usable year-round, is accessible to dogs who are leashed, and is appropriate for children of all ages. Along this trail, visitors might be able to spot raptors, small birds, squirrels, deer, fish, insects, frogs, and more. Also in the area but rarely seen are cougars, bobcats, bears, beavers, and river otters.
Dillon Falls to Benham Falls
The trailhead for this hike begins at the Dillon Falls Day Use Area and proceeds South along the Deschutes River Trail. This section of the Deschutes River trail features a beautiful forest, waterfalls, and opportunities to see birds, deer, squirrels, fish, insects, and frogs. Like the Benham Falls to Slough Meadow section of the Deschutes River Trail, some visitors might be able to spot a cougar, bobcat, bear, beaver, or river otter if they are lucky!
This 6.8-mile round trip point-to-point trail is rated as moderate, though parts of the trail can get quite muddy.
Tumalo Reservoir – Fun Things to do Around Sunriver, Oregon
Located west of Bend, the Tumalo Reservoir is one of the best locations in Deschutes county for birding. Depending on the time of year, Canada geese, American wigeon, ducks, gulls, grebes, and more all flock to this area. Occasionally, raptors can be seen flying overhead, too! Osprey, golden eagles, bald eagles, and hawks all call Central Oregon home.
Todd Lake is an easy 1.7-mile loop trail that circumnavigates Todd Lake. The hike is located just off of the Cascade Lakes Highway near Mount Bachelor. Popular for its accessibility, gorgeous forest setting, mountain views, and abundance of wildlife, Todd Lake is one of the many fun things to do around Sunriver, Oregon for wildlife fanatics.
If you’re lucky, you might be able to spot raptors, small birds, fish, marmots, deer, rabbits, reptiles, insects, squirrels, chipmunks, and more. Like most other trails near Sunriver, bears, bobcats, and cougars also inhabit this area although seldom seen.
Tumalo Mountain Trail
Tumalo Mountain Trail is a 3.8-mile round trip out-and-back trail located near Sunriver, Oregon. Climbing about 1,500 feet up, Tumalo Mountain is a moderate but rewarding hike. With views of Broken Top, Mount Bachelor, and the High Desert, this trail is very beautiful.
Along the trail, you might be able to see birds, reptiles, deer, squirrels, chipmunks, and other small animals. Dogs are allowed on this trail, but they must be leashed.
