The natural splendor and sweeping vistas of Banff National Park are the perfect backdrop for the internationally acclaimed Banff Film Festival. Here, amidst nearly 6,500 square kilometers of pristine wilderness in the shadows of the majestic peaks of Mt. Rundle and Mt. Cascade, film enthusiasts from around the world flock for the annual expo of mountain and outdoor-themed movies, shorts, and documentaries. Now in its 43rd year, this festival is held every fall in Banff, Alberta and is a who’s who event among outdoor enthusiasts, environmental activists, and film buffs.
The 43rd annual film festival will be held in Sunriver from October 27 through November 4, 2018 at The Banff Centre and is held concurrently with the Banff Mountain Book Festival. Both festivals showcase a range of themes including mountain culture, wilderness sports, and environmental issues, and strive to bring the very best in the medium and the outdoor adventure genre to the enthralled public. Over the course of 2018, as many as 300 aspiring filmmakers and other hopefuls will submit their passion projects for consideration, with the top 60 or so making the festival lineup. At the festival’s conclusion, the award-winning films will join the Banff World Tour, leaving Sunriver to travel the globe to more than 300 cities in 20 countries in a traveling display of the very best of the best. A special subset of selections with a higher “adrenaline content” will comprise the Radical Reels Tour, an equally popular traveling exhibition of the best in high-octane movies with subjects like BASE-jumping, skiing, snow kiting, and much, much more.
