Here are a few of the hidden gems in Sunriver you need to make sure to check out on your next vacation that you probably won’t find in any Sunriver guidebook:
Hike to Tumalo Falls
Though there are many different and incredible options for hiking all around Sunriver, if there’s one in particular to recommend that not many others may know about, it has to be Tumalo Falls. Located just a short drive north of Sunriver, Tumalo Falls is a breathtaking 89-foot-high waterfall flanked by amazing forests and scenery. There is a 6.9-mile trail that is perfect for hiking that will allow you access to the viewpoints of the waterfall itself, and it is a trip that will be well worth the effort.
Explore the Incredible History of the Sunriver Area
The area of central Oregon, and Sunriver in particular, is one that is filled with an immense amount of culture and history, and one place where you can experience it all and more is at the High Desert Museum! The High Desert Museum is a place where art, history, culture, and wildlife all come together to tell the stories and history of the area’s diverse people and inhabitants! There are a number of permanent exhibits as well as constantly changing exhibits throughout the year, and so you’ll be guaranteed to see something new no matter what time you choose to visit! See live animals such as porcupines and bobcats, see authentic artifacts left behind by the indigenous people of this land, and much more.
Visit the Lava Lands
You probably won’t find this place in any Sunriver guidebook! Created around 7,000 years ago by the volcanic eruption of Lava Butte, the Lava Lands is a few-miles-wide sea of jagged lava rock just waiting for you to explore! Used by NASA in the late 1960s to help train astronauts on what the surface of the moon could be like, the Lava Lands of Central Oregon are a unique landscape unlike anything else you’ll find in the great Northwest of the United States. You can take a hike on the 5.5-mile Sun-Lava paved path known as the “Trail of Molten Land” and the “Trail of the Whispering Pines,” hike to the top of Lava Butte for breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys, and so much more!
