At the end of the day all we want for our children is to be happy, but for the last few months, happiness has been a tad difficult to find. As the pandemic struck, it was not just the workers who became quarantined at home; it was the students as well! Graduations and proms were cancelled, play dates ended, and their world became limited to what was inside the four walls of home. The good news is that the world is slowly opening up again, and although you may not be able to do much about your children not being able to be with their friends, you can give them an education they will never forget with an exciting visit to Central Oregon—and a stay in one of our
vacation rentals in Central Oregon, of course!

Expanding Their Horizons
After months of being cooped up at home, there is some solace to be found in the fact that travel restrictions have lifted and online schooling can be participated in wherever there is internet access, including Central Oregon. And even though comfort is not always the first thought of school architects, comfort is the first thing we think about in the design of our Sunriver Pines “temporary schoolhouses!” Fully equipped kitchens offer cheerful spaces for mom or dad to create nutritious and delicious lunches while the dining areas are open to the rest of the house, alleviating any feelings of being locked away to learn! On nicer days, students may even choose to bring their laptops out to the decks on the back of the house, staring off into the trees instead of slumping over the screen. Younger children will still get their recess time, perhaps taking a walk around the neighborhood or in the vacation rentals in Central Oregon with game rooms, heading to that space for a game of pool, ping pong, or whatever tables are available for fun!
Field Trips Are Fun Again
Although field trips were cancelled along with proms, graduations, and pretty much everything fun, they are once again back on the agenda! Take a historical field trip to the Deschutes Historical Museum, 129 NW Idaho Avenue in Bend, and explore everything the artifacts, exhibits, and displays that reveal the humble beginnings of a region built on lumberyards. Open again after brief closures during the pandemic, it is requested that you make a reservation by calling 541-389-1813 to schedule a time for your visit. They do accept walk-ins, but those will be scheduled for the next time available. Or, if you feel like coloring outside the lines, a visit to Lone Crow Bungalow, 937 NW Wall Street (also in Bend) can double as a shopping expedition and a field trip, as the gift shop is located inside Bend’s oldest building! Built before Bend became a town, this colorful shop was once Smith Hardware, with the owners living on the upper level; interestingly, of the three children who once made the space their home, the first baby born in Bend (in Bend’s first hospital) continued to live on the property until she passed in 2010. Today, the Lone Crow is one of our favorite places to pick up gifts for those we love!
Time for Breakfast, Lunch, or Dinner
Our Sunriver Pines vacation hideaways feature cheerful kitchens that take most of the chores out of meal prep, but there will be times when you just will not want to cook a meal and that is perfectly alright! Enjoy a hearty breakfast from the Victorian Café, 1404 NW Galveston Avenue in Bend where the Famous Proud Mary will please all parents. The Lemon Tree, 718 NW Franklin Avenue in Bend is justifiably proud of their creative cuisine, including their renowned Coronation Salad when lunch time arrives. Dinnertime offers a little more freedom, as the school day will have been completed by then, but fortunately you will not have far to travel to fill your empty belly! Serving your favorite American comfort foods with a killer cocktail menu, Drake, 801 NW Wall Street in Bend, will soon be your favorite! The Blacksmith Restaurant located at 211 NW Greenwood Avenue offers great steaks in a building that was once the local smithery (another nod to history) and Barrio, 915 NW Wall Street, will appease the need for tacos and tapas!
